10 FREE Things To Do In Golden This Summer That Are Actually FUN
Want to actually have fun this summer AND stay on budget? It doesn’t hurt to be a little more frugal these days. But guess what, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything fun! Whether you’re a broke college student at the School of Mines, on a family vacation, or a Golden resident looking for a low cost weekend, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve curated a list of FUN, FREE activities this summer that doesn’t just include hiking and going to free museums. Here are some great options to explore this summer:
1.The Golden Farmers Market
The Golden Farmers Market is a free event that takes place every Saturday morning from 9:00am-1:00pm from June through October. This vibrant market offers a delightful array of local produce, artisan goods, and handmade crafts. Even if you're not planning to buy anything, the market provides a lively atmosphere with live music, food trucks, and the opportunity to connect with the local community.
I like getting coffee from Astro Van Coffee and a cookie from Sugar and Sprinkle (their gluten free chocolate chip cookies are SO good). After picking up a light treat from the market, find a nice spot on the bank of Clear Creek, it’s what all the locals do. There’s plenty of rock seating by the creek where you get free entertainment with all of the tubers and whitewater kayakers floating by.

2. Music and Movies at Parfet Park
Who doesn’t love free music? Parfet Park hosts Music and Movies in the Park on the first Friday of every month throughout the summer. Grab a picnic blanket, a few lawn chairs, and meet up with friends or family to enjoy a night of entertainment in the mountains at no cost. Sit back, relax, and cozy up outdoors for a delightful evening featuring live music followed by a family-friendly movie under the stars. Check out the 2024 schedule to plan your visit.
3. Car Picnic at Highway 93 Pull Off
Here's a hidden gem you won't find in most travel guides: a picturesque lookout spot perfect for watching the sunset. Located off Highway 93 between Golden and Boulder, this westward-facing spot offers a stunning backdrop of the mountains. It's an ideal location for a low-key car date. Convert the back of your trunk into a cozy bed with some blankets and pillows, grab your favorite snacks and drinks, and enjoy a romantic evening with your significant other. The wide "parking lot" can be tricky to pull into if you're driving north, so if you're coming from Golden, it's safer to drive past the spot, make a U-turn at the next light, and approach from the south.
Location: 2511-2923 S Foothills Hwy, Boulder, CO 80303
4. Picnic at Clear Creek
Spend the day like a Golden local this summer by relaxing on the bank of Clear Creek. When the sun is out and temperatures soar above 80 degrees, Clear Creek becomes the go-to spot for cooling off. While tubing is the most popular activity, the creek is also a fantastic place to hang out. Pack up a cooler, bring a few lawn chairs, and enjoy the day lounging by the creek. Take occasional dips to beat the heat and savor a carefree, refreshing summer day without spending a dime.
5. Sunrise Hike to Carl’s Point
Watching the sunrise over the Denver skyline is magical and should definitely be on your summer bucket list this year! Carl’s Point is a lookout spot on the Basalt Cap Loop trail on South Table Mountain and it’s a relatively short and easy hike. If you decide to do the full loop, it’s about 3.7 miles, although it’s only about a mile to Carl’s Point, so 2 miles out and back if you want to skip the loop. The trail is manageable for most fitness levels and offers an unforgettable way to start the day.

6. Sunset Hike to Castle Rock
The view from Castle Rock on North Table Mountain is stunning. Overlook the charming mountain town of Golden on it’s most iconic rock formation. It’s a short hike to the top, about 1.5 miles, and takes about 49 minutes to complete. Start your hike in the evening so you can watch the sun set over the mountains. Bring plenty of water and remember along with a flashlight or headlamp for the hike down.

7. Tube Clear Creek
You don’t have to rent tubes to float down Clear Creek, simply bring your own and skip the shuttle service fee by walking. If you don’t already have your own tube, you can buy one at Walmart for only $5. It’s so much more cost effective than renting a tube and it’s the same experience.

It’s adjacent to the playground that’s directly across the street from the City of Golden government building. No need to set up your own net; just bring a volleyball and some friends for a fun, active day. The park also provides picnic tables and access to Clear Creek, making it a great spot for a full day of outdoor activities.
10. Frisbee Golf at Estates Park
If you’re looking to try something new, check out the 18-hole disc golf course at Estates Park. This leisurely sport is a great way to spend time outdoors and have fun with friends or family.
