A Locals Guide to a Day in Golden, Colorado in Winter
New in town or just visiting? Either way, you’re in the right place if you’re wondering how to make the most of a day in Golden during the colder months - from a local’s perspective. I’ve been living in Golden since 2023 and have fallen in love with this Colorado mountain town. I’m sharing a few of my favorite things to do here, that I think others would enjoy too.
Stop 1: Breakfast at Bonfire Burritos
You cannot visit Golden without stopping for breakfast at Bonfire Burritos. These are some of the best breakfast burritos I have had in my entire life. I’m not kidding. The ratio of ingredients is perfectly proportioned, not too much egg, and loaded with shredded hash browns with your choice of meat. Two of my favorites are the Jackalope (veggie) and the Deluxor (carne asada). The atmosphere is always so lively and energetic. Even when it’s busy, the staff are so positive and upbeat. They also have dog friendly indoor and outdoor seating, so it’s a great place to bring your friends and your pups. They also have a small bar with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, if you’re feeling a boozy brunch. Make sure to stop here on your way into Golden, even if you’re just picking up food to go. Trust me, you will not regret it.
Stop 2: Downtown Golden - Humble House & Clear Creek Trail
I’d recommend spending the first half of the day exploring Golden’s adorable downtown. Golden is the most iconic western, mountain town just outside of Denver. There’s plenty to do downtown, even in the winter. When you first arrive, check out Humble House cafe, one of my favorite places to go for some coffee. Afterwards, take a lap up and down Washington St, Golden's main street, that’s spotted with cute boutiques and shops. Most of the shops downtown open at 10AM. If you have time, walk the Clear Creek Trail, a paved, flat trail in Golden that follows the creek and is beautiful when it’s surrounded by snow. You can find plenty of parking spaces on 11th st. next to the Golden History Park.
Stop 3: Buffalo Bill Museum
For the next stop, take a little drive up into the mountains and get a little history lesson at the Buffalo Bill Museum. At the top, you’re surrounded by breathtaking views of the mountains, a great place for photos. Tickets to the museum are just $5 a person. The museum is small, but informative. The tour begins with a 20 minute video on the story of Buffalo Bill and the history of the surrounding area which I found quite interesting. Next to the museum is a gift shop and cafe for lunch. If you’re up for it, 2 mins down the road from the museum is Lookout Mountain Park, which has another look out spot and scenic views.
Stop 4: Sunset Hike at North Table Mountain
Hike to Lichen Peak on North Table Mountain for some spectacular views of Golden and Denver. I did this as a sunset hike in early March with no snow on the trail and no spikes needed. Always check trail conditions prior to arrival and dress accordingly. It is considered a moderately challenging 1.6 mile hike, with there being a pretty steep incline at the start. Arrive an hour or so before sunset and get an exceptional westward facing view of the sun setting behind the mountains.
Stop 5: Dinner & Drinks at the Golden Mill
You must end the day at Golden’s iconic food hall - the Golden Mill. Kick back and enjoy a wide selection of beers, ciders, and ales. This is a food court style restaurant so you have the option to choose to eat at Tacos Al Chile, Republic of Chicken, Rolling Smoke BBQ, or Sushi Sora. The Golden Mill also has plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating, with a dog friendly section outside. Upstairs there are fire pits which create a cozy atmosphere and keeps it warm enough to sit outside even when it’s cold. Make sure you check in at the register upon entering to get your card that unlocks the tap and allows you to order food. Before you leave just drop off the card up front or in the designated bins.
